Research Interests:

Research interests focus on education, rehabilitation, and employment of persons with disabilities, particularly those who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Current research, through the federally funded Rehabilitation Research and Training Center for Persons who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (2001-2006) is directed toward examining the impact of legislation and policy on vocational rehabilitation service delivery to deaf consumers and ascertaining the perspectives of deaf employees on employer provided workplace supports.

Professional Biography:

Dr. Anderson has been involved in the field of rehabilitation for over 30 years. He earned his Ph.D. from New York University in 1982, M.S. from the University of Arizona in 1970, and B.A. from Gallaudet College in 1968.  In addition to his academic degrees, he is a certified rehabilitation counselor (C.R.C.) and has been a faculty member at the University of Arkansas since 1982.  Prior to his employment at UAF, he worked as Program Coordinator of Continuing Education Programs at LaGuardia Community College (Queens, NY), Associate Research Scientist at New York University Deafness Research and Training Center, and Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor with Michigan Rehabilitation Services, Detroit. 

Academic Interests and Accomplishments:

Awards, honors, significant teaching, research, and service accomplishments include:  Chair, Board of Trustees, Gallaudet University; Presidential appointee to the National Council on Disability (2002-2005); National Hall of Fame for People with Disabilities (2004), Boyce R. Williams Distinguished Service Award from the American Deafness and Rehabilitation Association (1995), and President’s Award for Distinguished Service from the Arkansas Association of the Deaf (2001). 

Personal Information:

Dr. Anderson is a native of Chicago and wife, Karen, is a native of New York City.  Daughter, Danielle, is a graduate of Hall High School and currently attends Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and is employed as a business analyst with First Health Services Corporation in Richmond. Son, Jamaal, is a freshman attending the University of Arkansas on a football scholarship and majoring in kinesiology.  Dr. Anderson and family enjoy African-American art, jazz, traveling, and sports.
