Health Science Professor Named Key Opinion Leader

Lori Turner, associate professor of health science, was one of 35 "Key Opinion Leaders" selected to develop the second phase of the National Bone Health Campaign-Powerful Bones, Powerful Girls in Washington, D.C., over the summer. She joined researchers from institutions such as the Harvard School of Public Health and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons in planning the next stage in a multi-year national education campaign to promote optimal bone health in pre-teen girls and thus to reduce their risk of osteoporosis later in life. Turner's research has focused on osteoporosis prevention, including educational intervention strategies for older adult women and identifying risk factors for osteoporosis in college-aged women. Her study on the benefits of gardening in maintaining bone health has been published both in a scholarly journal and extensively in popular publications worldwide. The bone health campaign is a partnership of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office on Women's Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Osteoporosis Foundation.
