Students Earn Experience Through Carver Project

Korbi Orr of Houston will be a junior at Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Texas, in the fall, but she will already have graduate-level experience under her belt by then, thanks to eight weeks spent this summer on the University of Arkansas campus.

Orr is one of three students working with College of Education and Health Professions faculty members as part of the George Washington Carver Project, an internship for students from historically black and Hispanic-serving colleges and universities around the country. Claretha Banks, assistant professor of vocational and adult education, and Fredrick Nafukho, associate professor of vocational and adult education, serve as mentors for Orr, Deirdre Alleyne of New York and Coquestia Lowe of Tulsa, Okla. Elementary Education Majors Take Part in Leadership Forum

Twelve future teachers experienced leadership in two ways on a recent trip to Washington. They learned about how U.S. leaders shaped the nation's history, and they became more comfortable in their chosen roles as leaders of students. Read More »

Bill Buron wants to help elderly people maintain their personhood through the ravages of dementia. The John A. Hartford Foundation of New York wants to increase geriatric nursing capacity and competence while developing leaders in gerontological nursing. Read More »

Tina M. Penhollow

Recent Doctoral Graduate Wins Award as Brightest Star on Horizon

Tina M. Penhollow received her doctorate in health science from the University of Arkansas on May 13. Less than a week later, Penhollow received a letter from the American Association for Health Education informing her that she was the winner of the association's prestigious Horizon Award for 2007.
