Master of Arts in Teaching

The route to teacher licensure through the University of Arkansas requires completion of the 3-semester, 33-hour Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree program. The MAT degree requires admission to the Graduate School. To be eligible for admission to the Graduate School, you must have earned a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0* on the last 60 hours of coursework on the bachelor's degree. Some programs have other requirements, so check with the appropriate department for their requirements.

     * In determining GPA eligibility for the MAT, the Graduate School calculates in all coursework as well as both the original and the second grade of grade forgiveness. Grades earned in courses taken as a Pre-MAT student will not be calculated in the GPA.

The secondary education program prepare teachers for middle and high schools in a wide variety of teaching areas. Students earn a bachelor's degree from a department in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences and then enter the Master of Arts in Teaching program in secondary education for some program areas. Teacher licensure course requirements are subject to change. Students must meet current requirements at time of application for graduation.
