Pre-MAT Information

Pre-Master of Arts in Teaching (PMAT) is the admission code given to an individual who has earned a bachelor's or master's degree and is not licensed to teach but wishes to do so. Through the UA Admissions Office, your program area would be EDUC and your plan would be PMAT. PMAT status is an undergraduate student who is taking courses required for admission to the MAT but is not currently seeking a degree. Being admitted as a PMAT student allows the individual to pay undergraduate tuition and fees while completing the coursework requirements.

A grade of "C" or better must be earned in each of the following courses for admission to the MAT degree program: ENGL 1013, ENGL 1023, ENGL 2003, COMM 1313, MATH 1203 (for elementary and middle level education only) and all pre-education core courses.

Programs of study, individual courses and licensure laws are always subject to state licensing change.

Pre-requisites may exist; refer to the Catalog of Studies for more information.

Passing scores on the following tests are required: Praxis I: Academic Skills Assessments. Praxis information is available at www.ets.org/praxis. Look for the menu "state requirements" and then "Arkansas" to find the correct tests to take for the state of Arkansas.

Refer to the teacher licensure checklist for information on the Praxis series tests.

Consult the Arkansas Department of Education Web site for information on non-traditional routes to licensure.

Request a PMAT transcript evaluation. Use the university's transfer equivalency Web site to fill out the evaluation.
