Scholarships Help Fort Smith Family Send Seven to University

When you come from a family of seven children, six of whom are attending the University of Arkansas at the same time, winning a scholarship can really come in handy.
Laine Asbury, a sophomore studying family and consumer sciences education, and her sister Lindsey Asbury, a junior high school teacher studying for a master's degree in special education, were two of nearly 200 students who received scholarships from the College of Education and Health Professions for the upcoming academic year. Nursing Student: Scholarships Make College, Raising Family Possible

Anastacia Miller of Prairie Grove takes two passengers when she drives to class at the Eleanor Mann School of Nursing, but they aren't fellow students at the University of Arkansas.
She drops off her daughter, Olivia, 5, at Community Preschool on Leverett Avenue in Fayetteville and her son, Ethan, 2, at the Infant Development Center on the Fayetteville campus.
Earning her college degree – a bachelor of science in nursing – while taking care of her two children would not have been possible without support she received in scholarships from the College of Education and Health Professions, Miller said. Read More »

Literacy Symposium Gives Teachers Tools to Reach Diverse Learners
Maureen McLaughlin, left, a member of the International Reading Association board of directors, shares a book with Debbie Hardwick-Smith, new principal of Parson Hills Elementary School in Springdale, during the second annual literacy symposium June 14 in Fayetteville. The curriculum and instruction department in the College of Education and Health Professions and the Arkansas Department of Education sponsored the two-day symposium for about 300 teachers. Differentiated Literacy for Diverse Learners was the topic that drew experts from around the country to present workshops and technology demonstrations. ![]()
New Nursing Master's Program Accredited
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing at the University of Arkansas recently earned accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education for its new master of science degree in nursing. With the first class of students graduating last month, the program is already improving patient care in Northwest Arkansas. ![]()

University of Arkansas professor Robert Costrell co-authored a report released June 7 that finds one of the nation's largest public pension systems for teachers fails two major tests of sound fiscal policy. ![]()
Vascular Nursing Society Honors Professor
New is a relative term. Peripheral arterial disease isn't new to health care professionals employed in vascular-related specialties - those that deal with the health of the body's blood vessels - but many in general nursing practice don't know about the simple test that can detect the disease and prevent pain and suffering as well as progression to life-threatening conditions. ![]()
