Dr. Hewitt came to the University of Arkansas after completing a 35 year career in public education. He served as a teacher, Dean of Students, Assistant Principal, Principal and Superintendent. He served as a superintendent for 17 years. He was active in the Association of California School Administrators and the California Small School Districts Association. During the last 10 years of his career, he delivered more than 45 conference workshops for the California School Boards Association, School Employers Association of California, the Association of California School Administrators, and the California Small School Districts Association. His areas of expertise are in school finance, budgeting, collective bargaining and school cultures.
After his retirement from the superintendency in 2004, he was active as a private consultant assisting school boards through workshops and conducting superintendent searches. He also worked for the Association of California School Administrators as a Member Services Representative providing leadership to over 1,500 members in 157 school districts. He continues as a consultant with the Nevada Department of Education working with Program Improvement Schools. He has served as part-time adjunct faculty at the University of the Pacific and California State University, Stanislaus.
In 1985, Dr. Hewitt was named to the Executive Educator 100, and in 1999 he received the Charlie Binderup Award from the California Small School Districts Association as Superintendent of the Year. In 2009, he was given the Innovative Teaching Award from the College of Education and Health Professions and the Outstanding Teaching Award from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Arkansas.
Dr. Hewitt has been married for 39 years to Linda Hewitt, a retired middle school science teacher. They have three children: a daughter in Henderson, Nev., a son stationed at McChord Air Force Base, and a daughter at Harding University, Searcy, Ark. They have four beautiful grandchildren, three girls and one boy.
