Athletic Training Education Program Hosts Splinting Workshop

Posted on 8/14/2007

Nine medical students and five orthopedic nurses joined students in the University of Arkansas athletic training education program in Fayetteville for a three-hour workshop July 27 on applying splints and casting material.

Medical students in residency at the Area Health Education Center-Northwest in Fayetteville, an outreach program of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, learned splinting techniques under the direction of David Adams, an orthopedic tech at the UAMS with 19 years of experience.

Jeff Bonacci directs the athletic training education program in the College of Education and Health Professions at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, which began a new cohort of students in July. He facilitated the session in the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Building that also included nurses from local orthopedic clinics. BSN Corp. in North Carolina provided financial support for the workshop, according to Bonacci.

This is an example of how the College of Education and Health Professions is collaborating with the local medical community and allied health professionals to provide continuing medical education, Bonacci said.

"This surely was a win-win for all attendees," he said. "This is the third consecutive year that we have utilized BSN and the first to invite the local medical community at little to no cost to the attendees. As a result of this workshop and the feedback from the attendees, this will be annual event."

Bonacci made initial contact with Dr. Bob Gullet, AHEC director, a year ago to investigate how the athletic training education program can assist and collaborate with the AHEC residence program with sports medicine education.

"This is the first effort in this process with many more to come," Bonacci said.
