Call Issued for Nominations to Faculty Governance Positions

Posted by George Denny on 8/14/2007

At our fall meeting on August 17, we will vote on a new faculty governance plan recommended by the college's Governance and Structure Task Force. Barbara Hinton sent the plan as an e-mail attachment on August 3. Faculty governance takes on increased importance as we face changes as a college.

We also will be voting as a college faculty for several governance positions. We want people in faculty governance positions who will be elected representatives able to speak for the faculty of our college. The elections will go better if we have nominees who express willingness to serve in this way. Consider volunteering to be a nominee for one of these positions. Also encourage colleagues who would do a good job to volunteer.

University Faculty Senate [2]: We have two senators whose terms expired this summer (Charles Stegman and Susan Mayes) and those positions will need to be filled. Already in the Faculty Senate and so not eligible for nomination are Inza Fort (Faculty Chair), Merry Moiseichik and Ro DiBrezzo (incumbent senators), Cheryl Murphy and Charles Riggs (at large senators), and Reed Greenwood (Dean). College Council [3]: If the proposed governance plan is approved, we will elect three positions for the College Council. In a single election, each eligible faculty member can cast three votes. The three nominees with the highest number of votes are chair-elect, at large with a two-year term, and at large with a one-year term, respectively.

After the college-wide election, each department in the college will elect one representative to the College Council and one alternate.

University Course and Programs Committee [2]: We need two nominees with graduate faculty rank. Especially welcome are those with experience on the college's course and programs committees. To learn more about the UCPC: http://cavern.uark.edu/depts/gradinfo/dean/courseprog/index.html

Again, I encourage you to consider nominating yourself for one or more of these faculty governance positions. E-mail me at gdenny@uark.edu or call me at 575-7320 by noon on Thursday, August 16, and I will see that your name gets included on the ballot. We will accept nominations at the meeting, but they will be write-in candidates.

Thanks,

George Denny
