Cultural Component Makes Literacy Program Special
Children who took part in a home-based literacy project sort cards from a reading comprehension game while attending a closing celebration for the program June 16 at Anij Emmon Assembly of God Church in Springdale.
Marta Collier reached down to touch the flowing black hair of the little girl. "You write me a letter, OK? Miss Anita knows how to find me."
The girl was one of 15 children who accompanied their mothers to a literacy project designed, not only to improve the children's reading skills, but also to teach them about their culture. Collier and her colleagues, Yvette Murphy and Deanna Perez Williams, embraced nearly every person in the crowd gathered at a celebration in June to close the literacy project for Marshallese mothers and children. Ritter to Review
'What Works' in Education
Gary Ritter established the Office for Education Policy in 2003 to provide data to aid Arkansas policy-makers in thoughtful decision-making about kindergarten through 12th grade education. With a new contract through the U.S. Department of Education, Ritter now will do the same for educators, state legislators and school board members across the nation. Read More »
Elementary School Mentors Prepare for University Interns

A panel of three Holcomb Elementary School teachers answered questions and gave advice Aug. 8 to fellow Fayetteville and Springdale teachers who will serve as mentors for University of Arkansas graduate students this school year. Read More »

Miller Elected President of the National Society for Shared Governance
Michael T. Miller, professor of higher education at the University of Arkansas, has been elected the 2007-2008 president of the National Society for Shared Governance. His one-year term will begin in November in Memphis, Tenn., at the society's Fifth Annual National Symposium on Shared Governance, where he will succeed Professor Glenn Nelson of the University of Pittsburgh.
