Miller Elected President of the National Society for Shared Governance
Michael T. Miller, professor of higher education at the University of Arkansas, has been elected the 2007-2008 president of the National Society for Shared Governance. His one-year term will begin in November in Memphis, Tenn., at the society's Fifth Annual National Symposium on Shared Governance, where he will succeed Professor Glenn Nelson of the University of Pittsburgh.
Miller has been active in the society since its inception six years ago. As a scholarship- and advocacy-based society, its primary purpose is to "explore, examine, and promote collaborative decision-making as a way to preserve democracy in higher education."
"This is an excellent opportunity for the University of Arkansas to be involved in the identification of techniques, models and frameworks for sharing authority in higher education among faculty, staff, students and administrators," Miller said. "I'm truly excited about this opportunity to serve."
Miller serves as head of the department of rehabilitation, human resources and communication disorders in the College of Education and Health Professions at the University of Arkansas.
Last year's meeting in Chicago drew nearly 300 faculty, staff and administrators, and early registrations for this year's meeting in Memphis are expected to top 500. As the new president, Miller will deliver the keynote address at the meeting titled "Trust and Trustworthiness in Decision-Making: Avoiding Getting Burned Twice." His primary responsibilities will then become coordinating the society's 2008 meeting in Milwaukee.
