Posted on 9/12/2007

The following article was published Sept. 9, 2007, in the Our Town section of The Morning News, which is based in Springdale. An online version was not available. Many of the school nurses who attended the School Nurse Summer Institute filled out hometown news release forms, and the information was sent to the newspapers they specified. Nurses traveled from as far as Camden, El Dorado and Texarkana to take part in the continuing education opportunity.

FAYETTEVILLE -- Mollyanne Lloyd, Carol Stone, Kandy Johnson, Gayle Howard, Penny Morgan and Marian Bolen, all of Fayetteville, and Christy Carter of Huntsville attended the seventh annual School Nurse Summer Institute on Aug. 1-3.

The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing at the University of Arkansas and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Area Health Education Center-Northwest in Fayetteville sponsored the institute.

Lloyd is the director of nursing in Fayetteville schools and has been a school nurse for 26 years:13 years in special education in California and 13 years with the Fayetteville Public Schools. She has a diploma from St. Joseph School of Nursing in San Francisco and a bachelor of science in nursing from Stanislaus State in California.

Stone and Johnson are registered nurses and work on the administrative team for Kids for Health in Fayetteville, a comprehensive, developmental health education curriculum for kindergarten through sixth grade.

"This is our third year to attend the institute. It's a great way to stay in touch with the current nursing trends and needs of the school nurse," Stone said.

Howard is a registered nurse with more than 30 years of experience in nursing with an emphasis in child and adolescent health and infection control. She has a bachelor of science in nursing and psychiatric nurse certification.

Morgan is an elementary school nurse.

Bolen is a school nurse at Root Elementary School. She is a University of Arkansas graduate, a registered nurse and a licensed practical nurse.

Carter is a registered nurse and a school nurse in Huntsville.

The three-day institute at the Jones Center for Families in Springdale focused on "Taking Care of Business: School Nurses Tapping Resources Effectively."

The nurses received 15 hours of continuing education credit.
