Elementary Education (Post-Baccalaureate Licensure Only)
For those with Bachelor's Degree not seeking an advanced degree.
If you already have a degree, do not want another degree, but do want a teaching license in grades Pre-K-4 in Arkansas, the following steps should be taken in order to begin the required curriculum:
1. Download and complete the "Request for Licensure Only Transcript Evaluation for Elementary Education" course grid. (click for Licensure Grid) Enter the class information of the course you took to fulfill each requirement. If you took a course you feel is equivalent to one listed but that differs significantly in title, please also send the course description. Suitable descriptions are usually in a syllabus, program catalog or other documents from the college or university. Also, use the University of Arkansas transfer equivalency Web site.
Obtain current transcripts, official or unofficial, from each institution attended. Ensure all entries are legible and your degree, minor, grades, hours and cumulative GPA are shown. If you did not take the courses from UAF, include an explanation page showing the institution's scheme for course numbering, grading, etc. (usually on the back of the transcript).
2. Mail the completed forms along with all of your academic transcripts as well as a letter stating your intent to receive licensure, but not an additional degree, to Cathy Weaver, 319 Peabody Hall, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, AR 72701.
3. You are required to have a cumulative 2.5 GPA on your Bachelor’s Degree or a 2.5 on coursework that you have taken that fulfills, as an equivalent, the pre-requisite requirements. These generally correspond to coursework at the freshman and sophomore levels.
After your grid has been evaluated and if you are accepted by the Elementary Education program, your grid will be returned to you with the courses you need to take for licensure highlighted.
4. Apply for admission to the University of Arkansas. Apply to be admitted to Elementary Licensure (ELEL), our non-MAT elementary licensure program.
5. After being admitted, contact Cathy Weaver at cweaver@uark.edu, and tell her you have been admitted to Elementary Licensure degree program, but want licensure only.
6. You will then be placed with an advisor and told whom to contact for advising.
Following completion of any remaining pre-requisite courses and passing the Praxis I exam, students are eligible to register for the junior and senior courses leading to licensure. To become eligible for licensure, a valid CPR card for both children and adults must be completed in the first (fall) semester of the senior classes.
All 3000- and 4000- level courses will be held on the campus of NorthWest Arkansas Community College. Requirements include approximately 9 months of student teaching experience in Rogers and Bentonville elementary schools. Senior-level students must therefore attend full-time. Praxis II: Early Childhood Content Knowledge must be passed prior to the senior year. Praxis II: Principles of Learning and Teaching: Early Childhood is taken during the senior year.
