Now I know
you won't believe it,
but just last weekend
I got carded for the first time --
well, first time in 20 years that is.
Really -- no kidding!
I was out with my sweetie
for a leisurely breakfast
just perusing the menu
at the local Denny's
and the senior starter
looked real good to me.
But when the waitress came by
with her everything's perky
and I mean EVERYTHING'S perky
just fresh out of high school look;
you know the one
catching those big blue eyes
across the table from me
LOOKING look --
she had the nerve to tell me
I wasn't OLD ENOUGH!
Well hang on honey,
oh yes I am!
Just let me get out my license,
'cuz I'm saving lives at 55.
Well she looked all chagrined
thinking her tip was down-sizin,
but I GOT my starter.
It was just the right size
for the lower, slower metabolism crowd,
and for less dough too.
Nothing' wrong with that!
So anyway --
I'm starting to think
this senior thing isn't so bad,
especially with our kids talkin' that talk --
you know, about THEIR kids,
potential that is, future that is
maybe sooner rather than later that is!
When I get to be the good cop.
When I get to be the nana,
the gramma, the memere
the abuelita.
Then it's no more bad copy,
that's for the parents.
I get to bring on the spoiling.
The dessert before dinner.
Stay up past your bedtime.
Toy store, movie house, junk food,
let's go to the mall -- ANYTHING YOU WANT
EXTRAVAGANZA!
So anyway --
I'm really starting to think
I like it here on the flip side.
The slow side.
The down side.
The finally got time
for what I want to do side.
And besides --
WHO CARES
if it IS the 'over the hill side'?
OK -- let's be real,
the WAY OVER the mountain side.
I always wanted to catch up with that darn bear
so I could see what he could see.
So now it's MY TIME --
and it's CARPE DIEM FOR ME!
