Professor Elected Chairman of State Counseling Board

Roy C. Farley, professor of counselor education at the University of Arkansas, was recently elected chairman of the Arkansas Board of Examiners in Counseling.
Gov. Mike Beebe appointed Farley to the board last spring. Farley's term expires Dec. 1, 2009.
The nine-member board meets two days each month at the state Capitol in Little Rock. The board is charged with overseeing the implementation of the law that governs counseling in the state of Arkansas. Farley fills the position of one of three counselor educators on the board. There are also three practicing counselors, one licensed marriage and family therapist, one person from the general public and one person who represents the elderly.
Arkansas was one of the first states, in the late 1970s, to pass a law governing counseling, Farley said. He was recommended for the post by the Arkansas Counseling Association. The counselor education program in the College of Education and Health Professions is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs, and Farley uses his experience with the accrediting body to offer guidance to the state board.
Farley has been on the UA faculty for 33 years and has nearly 40 years of experience in rehabilitation counseling and counselor education, research and supervision. He is a member of the American Counseling Association and several other counseling related professional organizations.
