Payne Discusses How Poverty Affects Education;
Minkel Describes Work with English-Language Learners

Poor children and their parents think differently about education than people with more money, but teachers can help when they understand the hidden rules associated with different levels of income, Ruby Payne explained to educators earlier this month.

Payne, of Texas, speaks all over the world, teaching educators and others about how poverty colors a person's outlook on the world. People living in poverty frequently lack the concept of a "future story," Payne said, meaning they have low expectations for the future. Read more »


Education of Boys Topic of Two Presentations

Two presentations in September sponsored by the Department of Education Reform at the University of Arkansas will focus on the education of boys.

Sara Mead, a senior research fellow at the New America Foundation, and Jelani Mandara, assistant professor at Northwestern University, will speak at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, in Rooms 227 and 228 at the Jones Center for Families in Springdale. The following day, the two offer a lecture on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville. The event is planned from noon to 2:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12 in Room 343 of the Graduate Education Building. Read more »

Gift Buys Equipment to Prevent Injuries, Aid in Rehabilitation

Bob Carver (B.S.E., 1960) has grown very close to the Razorback athletic programs since his years as a student at the University of Arkansas. Recently, his close proximity proved a catalyst for a gift of $59,600 to the graduate athletic training education program in the College of Education and Health Professions. Read more »

Workshop Focuses on Caring for Aging Parents

The Office for Studies on Aging will present a workshop "Five Wishes for Advanced Directives" at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 24. Lunch will be provided and the workshop about preparing for end-of-life medical decisions is free. To reserve a seat, contact Shari at 575-6762.

Online Master's Degree in P.E. Starts in Fall

A new, online master of education in physical education degree will be offered by the College of Education and Health Professions this fall. Information about enrolling is available here.
