Nontraditional Licensure
The University of Arkansas' curriculum and instruction department offers a traditional licensure program. For information on nontraditional or alternative licensing, visit the Arkansas Department of Education at http://www.arkansased.org/teachers/nontraditional.html.
Currently, the University of Arkansas offers CIED 5573 and CIED 5593 as the reading classes required for admission to the Arkansas Department of Education's nontraditional licensure program. These are the reading courses approved for our institution by the Arkansas Department of Education.
You can locate the fall reading classes by going to the schedule of classes at the university's ISIS Web site at https://isis.uark.edu/psp/epprd/EMPLOYEE/EMPL/h/?tab=PAPP_GUEST. On the search menu, there is a dropdown menu that allows you to choose off-campus as the location. When you enter CIED under graduate classes, it will pull up many courses. Please locate CIED 5573 Foundations of Literacy Sec. 901 offered MW 4:30-6:00. It is the first eight weeks (8/25/08-10/14/08). The other class is CIED 5593 Advanced Diagnosis and Intervention Sec. 901 offered MW 4:30-6:00 in the second eight weeks (10/15/08-12/09/08). Both courses are taught on the NorthWest Arkansas Community College campus in Bentonville. These classes are NOT taught online.
In order to enroll in these classes, you must apply and be admitted to the University of Arkansas as a non-degree-seeking undergraduate. Information on applying is available from the Admissions Office at http://admissions.uark.edu/.
Because these reading courses are graduate classes, there is also a form that needs to be filled out (called out-of-career) located here http://www.uark.edu/depts/gradinfo/forms/student/out-of-career-reg-grad.pdf. Fill out the top part of this form and take it to Cathy Weaver in Peabody Hall 309 after you have been admitted and are activated.
The other part that you need to complete on the form is the title of the courses that you are requesting to take (those listed above.) This goes in the "undergraduate" box. Mrs. Weaver will finish this up by sending it to the Graduate School.
When the Graduate School verifies that you have been admitted and are able to be registered, they will add you to the classes, assuming they are not full yet. You are unable to register for these classes through ISIS yourself since you are taking these as a non-matriculating student. It is out-of-career because you are not applying for admission to the Graduate School for a graduate degree.
