Education Reform Doctoral Degree Approved for 2009

Posted on 8/13/2008

The department of education reform in the College of Education and Health Professions will offer a doctoral program in education policy, beginning in the fall of 2009.

The Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating Board unanimously approved the new Ph.D. for the University of Arkansas on July 25.

Daniel Grant, chairman of the board’s academic committee and former president of Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, expressed enthusiastic support for the new degree. Because of its emphasis on education reform, Grant said, the degree would be good for the university and good for Arkansas.

The college established the education reform department in 2005 with a $10 million private gift and $10 million from the university’s matching fund. The department has six endowed professorships, 10 doctoral fellowships and funds for research and projects.

The department has awarded six fellowships since it was created to students working on degrees in collaboration with other departments on campus.

The program will begin accepting applications this fall for matriculation in the fall of 2009. Several new courses such as Economics of Education and Politics of Education are being created for the degree program. Other new courses will correspond with some of the study areas of the endowed chairs: school choice, accountability and teacher quality.
