Mother and Son to Walk at May Commencement
Missy Raley and her son, Zach Raley, will each take home diplomas from the University of Arkansas on May 9.
Although the two earned degrees in different programs – mom in human resource development and son in recreation – they took the same geology class, doing a bit of studying together. They traded advice as students, too.
Missy Raley started college in the traditional manner, enrolling after high school graduation, but she dropped out and then wasn't able to complete a second attempt at college because of a move. Read more »
'Edible Autos' Teach Future Teachers Classroom Methods
Vegetables, fruit, bread, cereal, pretzel sticks, rice cakes, candy – all were "ingredients" in "food cars" that Cathy Wissehr's childhood education students built for their science methods class at the University of Arkansas.
Early one cold March morning this year, the students brought their cars in shoeboxes and Tupperware containers to Peabody Hall. They were also allowed to bring what Wissehr called a repair kit. Several were making modifications to their food cars as class started. Read more »

Human Resource Development Program Allows Woman to Achieve Goal
Danita Keith is breaking new ground.
The Oklahoma native will be the first person in her family to graduate from college later this year. She will walk in the University of Arkansas commencement ceremonies on May 9 and finish her coursework this summer for a bachelor's degree in human resource development. Read more »
Boat Tours of Lake Fort Smith Prove to Be Effective Interpretive Programs
A University of Arkansas professor is introducing the world to Lake Fort Smith State Park next month. At the international conference of the National Association for Interpretation in Athens, Greece, Gregory M. Benton will present a case study of the effectiveness of a boat tour as an interpretative program about Lake Fort Smith. Read more »

Researcher Describes Physiological Differences that Put Women at Risk
When Heidi Kluess began studying cardiovascular disease, she didn't think she would find much difference between women and men.
She was surprised.
Kluess, an assistant professor of kinesiology at the University of Arkansas, spoke about her research recently at the 2009 Arkansas Health Disparities Conference. She described how the ways in which men and women differ put women at greater risk for cardiovascular disease and contribute to a disparity between the outcomes experienced by each gender. The College of Education and Health Professions will honor faculty members for advising, teaching, research and service at its annual spring faculty and staff meeting on May 1 on the University of Arkansas campus.
