New Museum Opens With Exhibit on Rocks, Rivers, Roadcuts
While she may have seemed cool and calm as she prepared for the opening of a new museum at the University of Arkansas, the little girl in Lynne Hehr was jumping up and down with excitement.
Hehr's stock in trade is hands-on learning in science and math, and the new museum, the University of Arkansas Discovery Zone, opening this month in Fayetteville in partnership with the Arkansas Discovery Network, enhances her mission of providing such learning experiences for K-12 students and teachers. Author's Books Hard to Keep on Shelf
University of Arkansas professor Christian Goering invited booing from the audience when he introduced Chris Crutcher, an author of young adult literature, at the Fayetteville Public Library this summer.
Goering, an assistant professor of secondary English and literacy, told the audience to boo him when he admitted that he doesn't own any of Crutcher's books. Read more »
Advisory Council Honors Dean Greenwood by Creating Scholarship Fund in College
Reed Greenwood, who retired July 31 as dean of the College of Education and Health Professions at the University of Arkansas, will positively affect students' lives after his tenure as dean thanks to a scholarship fund created in his honor by the college's Dean's Advisory Council.
"No one can question Reed's reputation as an educator who is all about the students," said Brenda Gullett, co-chair of the council. Read more »
Kinesiology Professor Competes in Decathlon
In his job as a clinical associate professor of kinesiology, Jack Kern teaches physical education courses to University of Arkansas students studying to be teachers. He's been pretty physically active most of his life, too.
"He talks the talk, walks the walk and jumps the jump," said Sharon Hunt, head of the department of kinesiology, recreation and dance. She was referring to Kern's recent performance in the U.S. Track and Field Masters Decathlon Championship in Seattle. Read more »
Arkansas Leadership Academy Introduces New Logo
The Arkansas Leadership Academy based in the College of Education and Health Professions at the University of Arkansas unveiled a new logo this fall. The academy offers professional development opportunities for the state's educators.
Barry Goodwin and Bryan Carr of Wal-Mart Inc., one of the academy's 44 partners, designed the new logo and presented the academy with it and display materials. Two large display boards feature background information about the academy, information about its institutes and pictures and quotes from academy participants and partners. Brochures were also provided. Read more »
Cheryl Murphy, Liz Stover Win Exemplary Course Award
Online course delivery is no longer the wave of the future — it's here — and a University of Arkansas faculty-staff team is riding high on that wave.
Cheryl Murphy, associate professor of educational technology in the College of Education and Health Professions, and Liz Stover, an instructional designer with the Global Campus, recently won an Exemplary Course Award from Blackboard Inc. They received the award at Blackboard's annual users' conference in July in Washington, D.C. Read more »
