Election for Chair Elect for 2009-10 school year. Gary Ritter selected.
Discussion of the Reed Greenwood Gift. The idea was that the college would seek a piece of art that represents the work of the College and it would be displayed in the college in honor of former Dean Greenwood. The college would choose the winning piece of art via a contest in which the winner would receive $500 from the college. Since the original plan, Reed Greenwood has offered to donate an additional $500 to make the grand prize worth $1,000 total. The Council discussed some of the details of this award and made the following decisions:
The art contest will be open to any student within the University community
The type of art to be submitted is restricted to "wall art" ... e.g. paintings, photos, collages, etc.
Ellen Odell and Angie will work together to develop the contest announcement along with the details for judging. They will report to committee at our October 7 meeting
Laura and Angie agreed to chair the Art Award Committee
College Council discussed ideas we would tackle this year:
Council will develop a plan for a luncheon lecture series that will attempt to bring faculty and students from different disciplines together and hopefully lead to collaboration among faculty throughout the college and at the least lead to a better awareness among faculty of the work of our colleagues. Gary was charged with coming up with a plan/idea for how this might look and bringing proposed ideas to next meeting.
Discuss ways in which the Boyer Center is being used and perhaps how it can be utilized differently. The Council must decide if we intend to engage in a formal and systematic evaluation of the Boyer Center
Council will, of course, handle awards again
Council will consider whether we should undertake more consideration of the personnel document
Council will consider seriously the reasons that our College is not included in US News university rankings and may decide to encourage the COEHP to make some necessary changes so that we can become part of this ranking. The Council members appeared to share the view that this ranking is important and we should make it a priority.
Associate Dean Mike Miller gave a report from the Dean’s Office
Dean Smith would like to be involved with our Council as much as he is welcome
Associate Dean Edmonston will be reconsidering the administrative structure of the College (e.g. centralized v. decentralized) and is open to changes if he believes that there is room for improvement. Council members are welcome to provide input on this question
Mike Miller indicated that the Administration will consider the work of the Boyer Center and our assessment will be helpful in this area
Meeting Adjourned at 3:20 pm. Next meeting on October 7 at 2 pm in Grad Ed 325.
