New Advisor Brings Experience Helping People

Rebecca Williams graduated from law school but then decided that she didn't want to practice law. She did, however, enjoy the client counseling aspect of law and will use some skills she learned about helping people in her new job: advising students in the College of Education and Health Professions.
The newest addition to the Boyer Center for Student Services, Williams has other experience assisting students. She previously worked as a graduate assistant, recruiting students for the Honors College.
Williams started working Sept. 22 as an academic advisor with Diana McGruder and Amy Koster under director Barbara Goodman. Williams will advise students of all majors, as do all of the advisors, and she will serve as the office liaison with the college's department of health science, kinesiology, recreation and dance.
She holds a bachelor's degree in history from Oklahoma State University and a juris doctor from the University of Oklahoma.
"One of my favorite people at OSU was my advisor," she said. "I believe in advising as providing guidance. I want the students to get what they want from their degree. I see my job as making sure the students know the requirements of their degree and helping guide them through the process."
Williams is also working on a master's degree in higher education leadership that she plans to finish next May. She taught Legal Ethics for Legal Assistants as an adjunct at Northeastern State University-Broken Arrow.
In addition to advising students, Williams will take on recruiting duties for the Boyer Center, attending both on-campus events and some college fairs at area high schools as well as talking with prospective students who visit the Boyer Center. She will oversee the center's Student Ambassador program, taking the five ambassadors with her to assist at events. The ambassadors are also available several hours a week to talk with both current and prospective students and to communicate with them by e-mail.
After her graduation next spring, Williams is planning a summer wedding. She dabbles in creative writing and Society of Creative Anachronism activities.
