The Secondary Education program (SEED) prepares teachers for middle and high schools in a wide variety of teaching areas including science. This one-year, full-time program includes one day a week of courses at the University of Arkansas coupled with internship (student teaching) experiences in three local schools during the academic year. Those who successfully complete the program will receive a master's degree from the University of Arkansas and an initial teaching license from the state of Arkansas permitting employment in the public schools.

Those interested in the program must first have earned a BA/BS degree in one or more of the sciences, pass the Praxis I examination and will have completed some preliminary coursework including a practicum in secondary education and teaching in inclusive secondary settings, as well as demonstration of computer competencies. Licensure in Arkansas is for grades 7-12 in Life/Earth Science or Physical/Earth Science. A transcript analysis is done to determine if additional science courses need to be taken. Applications to the Graduate School are due in January for the summer term that starts each summer in June and ends in May.

For more information about this exciting degree option and for information about Noyce Fellowships to support science and mathematics teacher education (open to students in the summer of 2009 and 2010), please contact Dr. Mike Wavering at wavering@uark.edu
