Dr. Calleja grew up in the San Francisco bay area where he attended San Jose State University, earning an undergraduate degree in physical education (1994). After completing school in the west, he and his wife decided to move to Northwest Arkansas so could he attend the University of Arkansas (UA) where he completed a master’s degree in adapted movement science (1999), and a doctorate in kinesiology, pedagogy (2004). Prior to his current position, Dr. Calleja was employed as the education outreach director (2003-2005) for the Microelectronics Photonics Department at the UA. As the director, Dr. Calleja connected the complexities of university research to K-12 education and the surrounding communities. Dr. Calleja currently works as a clinical associate professor of kinesiology, teacher education at the UA. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses that prepare students for the rigors of working in a K-12 and university setting. In addition to teaching, he also conducts research related to improving K-12 classroom pedagogical techniques. Dr. Calleja has recently started to collaborate with teachers from the Springdale school district to develop an elementary school curriculum that will simulate what it is like to train for and travel on a mission Mars. The goal is to excite elementary students about their futures as adventurers and explorers. Finally, Dr. Calleja participates in service opportunities both in an outside the walls of the UA. Over the past four years, he has co-led a teacher education program to Ireland. The goal is to provide future teachers with an opportunity to compare the United States and Irish education systems. Beyond his work, Dr. Calleja enjoys traveling and participating in outdoor activities with his wife and two children.
